EMA Categorisation of antibiotics

The Antimicrobial Advice ad hoc Expert Group (AMEG), established by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), provides essential guidance on the use of antibiotics in animals and the potential implications for public and animal health.
The group's recommendations are based on evidence and are widely regarded in the UK as a gold standard for expert advice. These recommendations are endorsed by key UK bodies, including the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD), Responsible Use of Medicines in Agriculture Alliance (RUMA), Food Industry Initiative on Antimicrobials (FIIA), and professional veterinary organisations like the British Veterinary Association (BVA), Pig Veterinary Society (PVS), British Veterinary Poultry Association (BVPA), and the Sheep Veterinary Society (SVS).
The purpose of the categorization is to give veterinarians a tool to help decide which antibiotic to use. The AMEG categorization does not replace treatment guidelines, which must also take into account other factors, such as supporting information in the summary of product characteristics of available drugs, restrictions on use in food-producing animals, regional variations in disease and antibiotic resistance, and national prescribing policies.
