Prednisolone is a glucocorticoid used as an anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive agent. It is commonly employed to manage allergies, autoimmune diseases, and inflammatory conditions in animals.
Essential insights
- Inhibition of inflammation: Prednisolone reduces the production of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes by inhibiting the enzyme phospholipase A2.
- Immunosuppression: It decreases immune cell activity, helping control excessive immune responses.
- Metabolic effects: Prednisolone influences metabolism by increasing gluconeogenesis and protein breakdown.
Breed-specific drug reactions
Lhasa Apsos, Poodles, Shih Tzus, Australian Silky Terriers, Yorkshire Terriers, and Dachshunds have a breed-specific sensitivity to subcutaneous injections of glucocorticoids, like prednisolone, which can lead to localized areas of alopecia. This reaction may result in permanent hair loss or skin changes at the injection site.
Due to this risk, the use of subcutaneous glucocorticoids is not recommended in these dog breeds.
