Metoclopramide is a substance used for the treatment of nausea and vomiting in animals. It is also employed to enhance gastrointestinal motility in conditions such as gastroparesis and reflux.

Essential insights

  • Antiemetic Effect: Metoclopramide acts as a dopamine D2 receptor antagonist in the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ) of the brain, reducing nausea and vomiting.
  • Enhancement of Gastrointestinal Motility: By blocking dopamine receptors and stimulating muscarinic receptors, metoclopramide promotes gastric emptying and movement through the intestines.
  • Central and Peripheral Action: The substance works both centrally in the brain and peripherally in the gastrointestinal tract to alleviate symptoms.
