Methylprednisolone is a corticosteroid used to treat inflammatory and autoimmune diseases in animals.
Methylprednisolone is administered systemically or locally to manage allergic reactions, inflammatory conditions, and immune-related disorders in various animal species.
Essential insights
- Inhibition of inflammatory mediators: Methylprednisolone reduces the production of inflammatory mediators like prostaglandins and leukotrienes by inhibiting the enzyme phospholipase A2.
- Modulation of immune response: It decreases the activity of immune cells such as T-lymphocytes and macrophages, mitigating autoimmune responses.
- Reduction of vascular permeability: By enhancing capillary integrity, Methylprednisolone reduces edema and tissue damage.
- Selective toxicity: Methylprednisolone targets inflammatory processes without affecting normal cell functions, minimizing side effects. However, prolonged use can result in adverse effects like suppressed immune function and hormonal imbalances.
Breed-specific drug reactions
Lhasa Apsos, Poodles, Shih Tzus, Australian Silky Terriers, Yorkshire Terriers, and Dachshunds have a breed-specific sensitivity to subcutaneous injections of glucocorticoids, like methylprednisolone, which can lead to localized areas of alopecia. This reaction may result in permanent hair loss or skin changes at the injection site.
Due to this risk, the use of subcutaneous glucocorticoids is not recommended in these dog breeds.
